Fantasy Series

BY MAKDA SOLOMON

Artist Statement:

For my printmaking self-directed project, I chose to express my thoughts and ideas about space and fantasy by exploring portraiture and the planets in our solar system, creating a story through lino printing and colour. I have presented this concept by adding fine details to my lino carvings and by creating a story of self-exploration in an elevated place, through space and time. Inspired by Aya Takano, a Superflat artist, I was interested in the way she portrays space and people and the relationships they have with each other. This then encouraged me to create the Fantasy series and explore bolder colours instead of sticking with the same black ink used for relief printmaking. I aim for these prints to be captivating and intriguing because of the relationship portrayed, and I hope that viewers think about their own relationship with themselves and the universe.
